UNDERSTANDING
THE RISKS
All major operations include an element of risk and though these
should 'not be over emphasized, the patient should be aware of these,
particularly the elderly who are at a greater risk than the younger
age group. Major complications include infection, blood clots in
veins of legs and lungs. These can occur in any centre in the world.
Problems and aspirations of each individual patient differ and
these must be discussed with the Surgeon at length before the patient
accepts the Total Knee Replacement operation. Patient must know
all that can go wrong and what can be done to save the situation.
CONSENT
For any surgical procedure, you need to sign an 'Informed Consent
Form'. You must understand the language of the form and clarify
all doubts before signing it.
